What we put on the walls makes a massive difference to the impression that a home makes, and there are several things you should consider before making your choice.
No matter what kind of house you live in, new or old, large or small, the walls play an exceptionally big role in how the home is perceived. How often have we been asked - how do I about choosing wallpaper? So in this post we have brought together our five best tips on how to go about choosing wallpaper.
1. Begin by ordering swatches for delivery to your home and let them stand against the wall for at least a couple of days to get a feel for how the wallpaper appears in different light, with the house’s surroundings and in relation to the rest of the interior and furnishings.
2. Take the room into account when you are choosing wallpaper. Does it have morning or evening sunshine, a high or low ceiling? If the ceiling is low with little light coming in, the room will appear smaller if you go for a wallpaper with a dark base. On the other hand, if the room is very light, the dark base can give a cosier feel.3. Choose something that you like and don’t worry too much about fashion. The first impression is often right, so be brave and follow your gut reaction instead of trying to think too much.
4. Think about the house as a whole, where the scale of the pattern differs from room to room. Switch from a large pattern to a small pattern in a single colour to create a sense of calmness in your home.
5. Think about how well the colours in the wallpaper go with skirting board and floor. If the floor is on the yellow side, the effect on the wallpaper colour will be completely different than if the floor tended towards grey. TIP! Think about neglected spaces, and be a little daring with rooms such as the guest bathroom, your walk-in closet or why not even the store room. The spaces are often forgotten but they do a lot for the overall impact and give your home a bit more personality. They don’t need many rolls of wallpaper, so you get a lot of bang for your buck.
